About the river

For the Whanganui Iwi (Tribe) the Whanganui Awa (river) means more than water, rocks and rapids.

It is our provider and Mana (prestige & strength) the healing and sacred waters of our people.

The Whanganui river (266km) begins at the mountains of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe and ends at the mouth of the Tasman Sea.

We welcome you to explore this timeless River and all its beauty into one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking National Parks and be hosted along the way by Tangata Whenua (People of the River).
